Finger Picking

Finger picking is among the most common methods with which string instruments are played. The Cuatro can be finger picked just as any other string instrument, but there are some interesting variations which can be done. Here, instructor Sarache demonstrates traditional finger picking making use of the thumb, index, middle and ring finger. The Cuatro has 4 strings, so making use of these fingers should be more than enough for now.

The strings are played both at the very top of the fingerboard and is compared to the sound which is produced as you start to get closer to the bridge. The difference in sound is highly noticeable, and most Cuatro players use this sound close to the bridge to imitate the Bandola (the bass of the lowlands which typically accompanies the Cuatro).

Another method being used, is an accent. An accent in finger picking is when you pluck a given string with strength, almost pulling the string and letting it snap back. This too gives a particular effect to the sound produced and can be combined with a wide range of techniques.
