Venezuelan Merengue on Cuatro

Venezuelan merengue is not Dominican merengue and it is not a generic Latin-rhythm label. It is a Venezuelan form: a pulse you can dance, a phrase shape the cuatro is built to carry, and a repertoire that sits next to vals and joropo in the same tradition. The right-hand pattern

The right hand is the form. A merengue groove on cuatro is a pattern of attack and lift, not a pop strum you already know. The left hand often stays close to a small chord family (major or minor I-IV-V) while the right hand does the talking.

Count it as five events:

1. Downward frenado (palm mute)
2. Upward strum
3. Downward strum
4. Ascending frenado
5. Downward strum

The awkward part is the two downs at the edges. Most hands want down-up-down-up forever. This pattern starts down and ends down. Mute the strings with the left hand and play only the right hand until that feels even. Then put the chords back.

What to practise, in order

1. Tune. Merengue with a sour F♯ is a headache you do not need. How to tune the cuatro.
2. Have G major and a minor family ready. G major and B minor I-IV-V.
3. Mute the strings and play only the five-event pattern until it is even.
4. Add the chords. Slow. The groove is evenness, not speed.
