The importance of the percussion with the Cuatro is unlike any other string instrument. It is a part so important that the fingerboard of the instrument is re-inforced with anothr layer of wood. There are various techniques which can be used for this, all of which are covered in our courses. Cheo Hurtado demonstrates the effects caused by the frenados, which is when we give a ‘tack’ effect to the instrument by hitting the strings as well as hitting the wood whilst maintaining the rhythm.
