Joseph Mohr was a Roman Catholic priest and poet from the Austrian Empire (now Austria). He is best known for writing the Christmas carol “Silent Night” lyrics in 1818. The song was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, and the two men performed it for the first time on Christmas Eve of that year at the St. Nicholas church in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. The song quickly became popular, translated into many languages, and performed by countless worldwide artists. Mohr died on December 4, 1848, in Wagrain, Austria.
